Man, getting ready for your first music festival is such a crazy exciting feeling, right? I still remember my first one – I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so pumped about the lineup. I thought it was gonna be non-stop fun, but when I actually got there I realized without a little planning the whole thing can turn into a sweaty, tired mess. Crowds, dust, heat, sore feet – it all hits you. So here’s the real stuff I learned the hard way that actually makes it way more fun.
First things first, sit down 2-3 days before and make a packing list or you’re definitely gonna forget something important at the last minute. I do this every single time now. Pack clothes for each day plus a couple extra outfits because something always gets spilled on or it randomly pours. Get the most comfortable shoes you own – the ones you can walk and dance in for 10-12 hours straight without crying. If you’re camping, test your tent and sleeping bag at home first or you’ll be miserable all night. Definitely take a good refillable water bottle, a small zip bag that stays close to your body, cash (ATMs there are either dead or have massive lines), a portable fan or mist spray because the heat can kill you, some snacks like nuts and chocolate for when hunger hits out of nowhere, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and a solid 20,000 mAh power bank – your phone dies crazy fast with all the photos and videos.
Oh and check the weather. If there’s even a chance of rain, throw in a raincoat or you’ll be soaked and freezing.
Now about staying fresh – because after a couple days you’ll feel gross if you don’t plan for it. Sun protection is number one. I skipped it my first time and ended up red as a tomato with crazy burning. Put on SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every two hours (set an alarm on your phone, seriously). Wear sunglasses and a cap so your eyes and head don’t fry. Try to chill in the shade between 12 and 3 when it’s hottest. And toss a small aloe vera gel in your bag just in case.
Drinking water is another big one. You’re dancing, walking everywhere, maybe having a few drinks – your body needs it bad. Keep that bottle with you and fill it up every time you see a refill station. If you start feeling tired or dizzy, sit down and drink immediately. I made a rule for myself: finish one full bottle after every set.
Festival toilets are… yeah, not great. So bring extra toilet paper, wet wipes (absolute lifesaver), dry shampoo for day three hair, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizer, and some bandages for blisters. Whatever personal stuff you normally use, pack that too.
And please protect your ears. The music sounds insane but standing right in front of the speakers will mess you up later. Get proper concert earplugs that don’t kill the sound too much and just stay a little back.
Go with people you actually trust, man. Don’t do your first one alone. Take your close friends, keep an eye on each other, make a buddy system so no one wanders off alone. If someone’s getting tired, take a break together. It makes everything so much better and safer.
Before you leave, download the festival app and mark your must-see artists. Give yourself extra time to walk between stages because the crowd moves like molasses. Look at the map and remember where the toilets, food, water points, first aid, and camping area are. Take a screenshot and keep it – even if your phone is dying it’ll still help.
Safety-wise, just be smart. If the crowd feels too crazy, step back. Set one fixed meeting spot with your group in case you get separated. Never take drinks or anything from strangers. Keep your stuff on you at all times. Don’t be shy about talking to security if something feels off. And it’s a good idea if at least one person in the group stays mostly sober.
At the end of the day, stuff is gonna go wrong – weather changes, you’ll get more tired than you thought, something might get lost. That’s just festival life. Roll with it, laugh about it, and keep enjoying.
Your first festival can easily become one of the best memories of your life if you do a little prep. I still go every year and learn something new every time. So go, have an absolute blast, make crazy memories, and take a ton of photos. If you’ve got any questions, hit me up – I’ll help however I can.
Have the best time ever! 🔥
